Families know that some times they can throw money at a university.
They also know that private interests (supplementary education, tutors) will often work with or cheat for kids during highschool to make sure the grades are legit for post-secondary.
For me, a medical excuse got me into post-secondary. Because my actions could not be controlled in highschool, my folks brought a doctor on board who gave me a bogus diagnosis and the language and math requirements disappeared from my life. My access to student loans even increased. My parents weren’t wealthy people, either. In my case Big Pharma nods at the teacher guarding the gates of knowledge and the requirements disappear. In exchange I was on and off of many different trial prescriptions.
This is about more than just money. Drug companies and educators now make their livelihoods in part on the understanding of academia as a “rare” and “special” place and time where this thing called “higher learning” can finally take hold.
There shouldn’t be jobs based on that lie, and anyone involved in the work (medical, psychological or educational) of cheating the student out of desired learning experiences and a comfortable state of mind shouldn’t get too angry about one day losing that job.
I say: more power and access for ALL kids. One shouldn’t even require a highschool diploma. Education can be extremely high quality and it can take place in a classroom or on an MP3 Player. Remove money and mental states as barriers and, for fuck’s sake, UNLOCK THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES FOR PUBLIC USE!!
